There is a multitude of math involved with proper backlit photography, so let me walk you through my process with this fine example of a Great Blue Heron. The sun is 22 degrees off the horizon here and 94 degrees on the compass. These numbers are easy, I don’t even have to calculate them. Using math I know the camera in this example should be pointed at 102 degrees, basically east/southeast, and -6 degrees off the horizon. Aww, who am I kidding, just fire away and see what you get! This one turned out pretty good.
