What if I told you this Indigo Bunting, possibly one of the bluest birds you’ve ever seen, isn’t really blue at all? You’d probably laugh it off because that’s clearly a joke; this bird is obviously blue. What if I told you this bird is actually black? You’d probably call me a liar and a fool and never believe another word I said. Well, guess what folks, the male Indigo Bunting is actually black! The diffraction of light through his feathers make them look blue, really blue depending on how much light hits them. That’s why I get so excited when a bunting perches in direct sunlight because… BLUE! Soooo blue!
