Bird: Pssst, hey buddy, yeah you, up here. I’ll bet you my left tail feather I can swallow a piece of this fruit whole. Me: I’ll take that bet, bird. I watched this overzealous waxwing trying to tackle the largest piece of fruit in the tree; he softened it up a bit then tried to swallow it, and failed. Then he flipped it up in the air and caught it, gummed it a little more and tried to swallow it again, and failed again. He repeated this process over and over again, failing each time. He finally gave up and dropped it from the top of the tree, watching it fall all the way to the ground. Then he looked at me with a sheepish little bird grin and went after a more reasonably sized meal.
