KilldeerThe Killdeer is not named so because it is a fierce predator of deer, but rather its call sounds a bit like “kill deer.” If I were a deer I’d probably stay away just to be on the safe side though, and at the very least it would probably be annoying to me, as a deer, to hear these birds flying around all day shouting “kill deer, kill deer!” One of my fondest birding memories from childhood has to be following around “wounded” Killdeer on the playground and trying to spot the long-legged little fuzzball babies. I knew it was all just an act, a really good act, but it took awhile to realize they were actually leading me away from the nest. It didn’t matter much though because they like to lay their gravel colored eggs in gravel!
