Ruby-throated Hummingbirds

Ruby-throated Hummingbird6I’ve walked away from every single hummingbird encounter feeling both amazed and confused, like perhaps my eyes were deceiving me or it was just my imagination. I can never get my head around the fact that I was just watching a bird! Such confident little fliers, they’ve flown right up to me like bog security at a checkpoint. “State your business… never mind, you smell like a glazed donut, you may enter.” Actually, a common misperception is that hummingbirds only eat nectar, or sugary water from feeders and that couldn’t be further from the truth. They eat all kinds of insects and even pick them off in mid-air. I’ve seen it and it’s just as awesome as you can imagine! I shot this sleeping beauty one morning- well, she landed there and shut her eyes for two seconds then took off. I guess that could be considered a power nap in hummingbird terms. Shooting hummingbirds in flight is extremely rewarding and frustrating. These are some shots from my only opportunity so far and I will gladly keep trying.
